Hyperhidrosis affects two to three percent of the population. It is characterized by embarrassing excessive sweating. Most sufferers experience excessive armpit sweating starting in late adolescence, but some experience excessive foot and hand sweating with an earlier onset, around age 13. The good news is BOTOX® for hyperhidrosis treatment exists, and it could work for you. Simply contact us today to learn more!
What Causes This Condition?
The best guess as to what causes hyperhidrosis is a genetic cause, although the gene(s) responsible have not yet been identified. Its early age of onset and the fact that it seems to run in families strongly suggests it is inherited. Most individuals have no apparent triggers for sweating and just excessively sweat regardless of the temperature or what is going on around them.
What Can BOTOX® Do for the Condition?
BOTOX® for hyperhidrosis works by temporarily relaxing certain muscles by blocking transmission of signals from nerves to the muscles. The sweat glands are tightly controlled by sympathetic nerves and normally only secrete sweat when these nerves stimulate them to sweat, usually in response to exposure to heat or exposure to stressful situations. In individuals with hyperhidrosis, the sympathetic nervous system seems to be malfunctioning and is constantly stimulating the sweat glands to produce sweat. BOTOX® injections can block the signals from these nerves and, thus, prevent the sweat glands from producing excessive, constant sweat.
Are the Results Permanent?
Although effective, BOTOX® for hyperhidrosis is not a permanent cure. Most patients need follow-up treatments at least once a year, and some need treatments more often than others. It all depends on the unique case.
